HyperZ, I just joined so I'm new and hope you don't mind me commenting....
The streaming thing is server based, as you know, so to do it as a desktop app is almost too hard. Flash will let you do partial dl then start to play but it eats resources up big time. The windows media group will use almost as much resources as flash but won't start to play until a threshold value is reached (% of file size different on almost every computer). FTP is great but the files must be stored in raw(uncompressed format) to be available for streaming. That's not entirely accurate, you'd have to have a stub that would do the partial decompressing and conversion to actually start to play before the completed download if you would have a rar or zip or z7 format files.

I speak from experience, I tried to setup streaming video training seminars for a customer of mine and it about caught my hair on fire! I got it to work but it was choppy and performance varied between machines. I would rate the final project as poor to shi**y, in fact I didn't sell it but offered it as a freebee in the hopes of getting more business (it worked).

I said all that, to say this, it is a tough project and I hope it works for you. Programmers are an odd bird, we all do better when we hear the words, "that can't be done". But we must have fun while doing it. Are you having fun yet? Good luck and I hope to see the app when you are done (the code would be better. ha ha).

Dead? Wouldn't say it is. More like in the freezer. If I have one problem it's starting to many things at once. I often get AHA! moments where I think "wouldn't it be cool if I made this". Problem is I always end up with to many things to do lol. This is one of them. There's a lot of stuff I still have to complete. I'm just waiting till I get time.

It's a great idea hypers, it seriously is. The only suggestion I would add is that you should definitely keep it limited to a small audience else everything will go wrong.
Imagine over 10 people streaming a movie that is located on the same server, this would actually kill the servers resources and result in the movies taken down.

Other than that it's really a great idea!

Yea Whoo that has crossed my mind. Thing is I can't sell it (that's just something I don't do ) and keeping it VIP-only here would make it only useful to a few people. On top of that I would need to waste a lot of time designing a not-so-easy-to-crack security model. Oh well, we will see .
